Forest School is an educational approach that emphasizes child-led, experiential learning in natural settings. Originating in Scandinavia, this model fosters holistic development by encouraging curiosity, resilience, and a deep connection to the environment. At Wild Wander Forest School, we embrace this philosophy, providing children with regular opportunities to explore, discover, and learn through hands-on experiences in nature. www.forestschoolassociation.org
The roots of Forest School trace back to Europe and Scandinavia, where the first kindergartens emerged in the 1800s. These early programs were designed for preschool-aged children, often held outdoors or in gardens, and centered around play-based learning. In the early 1900s, Germany's Waldorf-Steiner philosophy further advanced the idea of teacher-guided, inquiry-based education, emphasizing creativity, imagination, and child-led exploration.
The modern outdoor school movement began gaining momentum in Germany during the 1950s and 1960s with the establishment of “Waldkindergarten” programs—literally translating to “Forest Kindergarten.” These programs soon spread to Denmark and Sweden, resonating with the region’s deep cultural appreciation for nature and outdoor living.
In the 1990s, the Forest School model was embraced across the United Kingdom, and by the 2000s, it had made its way to the United States. Today, there are over 100 independent Forest Schools across the country—including ours, right here in North County San Diego, where children continue to thrive in the natural world through wonder, play, and discovery.
Our curriculum is place-based, inquiry-driven, and inspired by the European forest school model. Learning emerges through hands-on experiences in nature, guided by students' curiosities and seasonal shifts. Each day includes sensory exploration, storytelling, journaling, hiking, and child-led projects.
We integrate foundational academic concepts—literacy, numeracy, science, and social-emotional learning—through play, observation, and real-world application. Children are encouraged to take supported risks, build relationships, and discover their strengths with guidance from skilled educators.
Enrollment begins with submitting an application on our website. Once reviewed, families are invited to a Parent Info Session, after which you may be offered placement. A deposit and signed enrollment documents are required to confirm your child’s spot.

Wild Wander Forest School offers a comprehensive educational program that aligns with California state education standards. Our curriculum integrates outdoor experiential learning with academic objectives, ensuring that children receive a well-rounded education. We focus on developing critical thinking, creativity, and social-emotional skills, all within the enriching context of the natural world.
Yes, our core academic program runs from early September through early June and requires a full-year commitment. This supports consistency and builds deep relationships within our community.
Summer Camps are offered as short sessions with no yearlong commitment—families may register for one or multiple weeks.
Safety is our top priority. Our teachers are First Aid & CPR certified, and we have robust safety policies, including:
Monthly emergency drills
Site-specific disaster preparedness plans
Tool use and boundary-setting practices
Safety calls, check-ins, and buddy systems
We believe there’s no such thing as “bad weather”—only inappropriate gear! When it rains, we set up shelters for backpacks, teaching supplies, and our nature library. Children arrive dressed in full rain gear, and we embrace the joy of puddle jumping and stormy-day discoveries.
During hot weather, we shift into water-based play at our Mud Kitchen, use spray bottles and frozen water bins, and find cool rest under shaded canopies. We monitor weather closely and adjust activities and locations for safety.
We cancel school only in cases of lightning, severe wind, unsafe flooding, or an AQI above 150. In extreme heat, we may shorten the school day or afternoon programming.
We are fully prepared for wildfires, earthquakes, and other natural emergencies. Our staff receives training in outdoor-specific risk management and follows detailed emergency procedures. We maintain stocked emergency kits, evacuation plans, and parent communication protocols.
Every fall, we host a family preparedness night to review protocols, supplies, and how we stay connected in any situation.
We understand that separating for the first time can be emotional for both child and caregiver. We take a gentle, respectful approach and collaborate with families to support each child's transition. This may include a meet-up before the first day, an extended drop-off window, or caregiver presence in the early sessions.
Our teachers create emotionally safe spaces with songs, stories, and empathy-driven language. With patience, warmth, and trust, most children quickly grow confident in their independence and connection to the group.
Yes. In accordance with California guidelines, we require up-to-date immunization records and a physician-signed physical form for all enrolled children. COVID-19 vaccination is encouraged but not currently required for students. All staff and volunteers are fully vaccinated.
Families must notify us of any allergies or medical conditions before the first day of class. For students with asthma, food allergies, or other diagnosed conditions, we require an individualized care plan signed by your child’s physician.
While we are not a nut-free program, we make every effort to prevent allergen exposure and teach children about safe food practices. Emergency medications like EpiPens must be provided and labeled.
A lightweight backpack sized just right for your child
A water bottle (12oz or more) they can carry comfortably—hydration packs are great if not too heavy
Sturdy, well-fitting hiking shoes or sneakers; on rainy days, please include wellies or rain boots with full heel and toe coverage
A full change of clothes: underwear, socks, a shirt, and weather-appropriate bottoms
A nourishing, low- or no-sugar lunch packed with protein, plus one snack to keep energy up
Sunscreen (lotion or stick preferred)
A hat for sun protection or warmth, depending on the day’s forecast
Because Wild Wander Forest School operates 100% outdoors, we are license-exempt under California law. Licensing is currently tied to buildings and indoor facilities, which forest schools do not use. However, we closely follow CDSS guidelines related to staff qualifications, background checks, immunizations, and safety protocols.
In place of state licensing, we report to an Accountability Committee through The Dignity Project, review family feedback three times annually, and uphold internal standards that often exceed licensing requirements, including smaller teacher-student ratios, ongoing training, detailed emergency preparedness and adherence to stringent Literacy Standards.
We also file a Private School Affidavit with the California Department of Education and report attendance for all TK and Kindergarten students. We proudly partner with charter schools and remain committed to full licensing as soon as forest school-specific pathways are formally established.
We use Procare to manage tuition payments, forms, and communication. Families can set up monthly recurring payments or make one-time payments directly through the platform.
Potty training is not required for enrollment in our younger classes (Forest Preschool). We use a small, child-sized camping toilet near base camp with full privacy and sanitation.
We partner with families to support each child’s progress and offer gentle, respectful guidance that aligns with home practices. Older students (TK & Kinder +) should be out of diapers and ready for more independent toileting.
We offer mixed-age programming for children ages 2.5 to 8 years, including:
Forest PreK (ages 2.5–4)
Forest TK & Kinder (ages 4–6)
1st & 2nd Grade (ages 7-8)
We also offer Homeschool Enrichment for K–4th grade.
Wild Wander Forest School operates out of natural spaces across North County San Diego. Locations vary by season and program—for example, we may be in one coastal reserve for summer camp and a nearby wooded area for fall semester programming.
Prior to the start of the school year or summer camp, families will receive a Welcome Packet that includes a detailed map of your assigned location, along with pick-up and drop-off protocols and other important arrival information to help ensure a smooth transition.
For all sessions, we recommend that children bring:
Nutritious snacks and water to stay energized and hydrated.
Closed-toe shoes suitable for outdoor exploration (hiking boots or rain boots are ideal).
Weather-appropriate clothing, including layers for warmth and sun protection.
Rain gear (rain jacket, waterproof pants) if rain is forecasted.
Sunscreen and insect repellent as needed.
A complete change of clothes in a labeled bag for unexpected messes.
Our outdoor environment encourages active play and exploration, so dressing for comfort and adaptability is key.
Yes, we accept charter school funds. Wild Wander Forest School LLC is an approved vendor for several charter schools in California. Families utilizing charter school funding can apply their educational funds toward our programs. We work closely with charter schools to ensure that our offerings meet their requirements and that the enrollment process is smooth for families. If you're interested in using charter funds, please contact us for more information on how to proceed. Or book a FREE Parent Info-Session.
Wild Wander Forest School stands apart through our unique blend of educational excellence, nature immersion, and child-led learning. We are not just an outdoor enrichment program—we are a comprehensive, standards-aligned, and deeply personalized educational experience.
Here’s how we go beyond:
Interest-Based Learning: Our curriculum is guided by the natural curiosity of the children. We follow their interests and inquiries to shape our themes, projects, and explorations. This fosters deep engagement, intrinsic motivation, and a lifelong love of learning.
Beyond the Minimum Standards: While we align with California state education standards, we intentionally exceed them. Our interdisciplinary approach integrates academic skills with emotional intelligence, environmental literacy, and creative expression. Children learn not just to meet expectations, but to think critically, explore boldly, and grow holistically.
Child-Centered Approach: We honor each child as a capable, curious learner. Our educators serve as guides and facilitators, creating space for autonomy, problem-solving, and collaborative play.
Connection to Place: We foster a strong connection to the land and natural environment through seasonal rhythms, ecological stewardship, and local exploration. Children develop a deep sense of belonging to the natural world and their learning community.
Whole-Child Focus: Social-emotional development, resilience, empathy, and communication are integral to our program. We believe in nurturing not only the mind, but the heart and spirit as well.
Community and Collaboration: Our small-group model encourages meaningful relationships, cooperative learning, and a close-knit community for both children and families.
At Wild Wander Forest School, we are redefining what education looks like—rooted in nature, fueled by curiosity, and shaped by joy.
We believe that nature offers valuable learning experiences in all weather conditions. Therefore, our sessions proceed rain or shine. We require that children come prepared with appropriate rain gear to stay comfortable during wet weather. In the rare event of severe weather conditions that pose safety risks (such as lightning storms or high winds), we will notify families of any cancellations or schedule changes.
Our curriculum is a blend of:
California state education standards: Ensuring academic rigor and consistency.
Forest School principles: Promoting hands-on, inquiry-based learning in natural settings.
Social-Emotional Learning (SEL): Supporting the development of empathy, self-awareness, and interpersonal skills.
Environmental Education: Encouraging stewardship and a deep connection to the natural world.
This integrated approach provides children with a holistic education that prepares them for lifelong learning and responsible citizenship.
We have access to nearby public restrooms during our sessions. However, in the event of an urgent need while away from facilities, our educators are well-prepared with portable sanitation supplies in true Wild Wander fashion. We follow a strict Leave No Trace ethic and operate under a carry-in/carry-out policy to honor and protect the natural spaces we use.
Once enrolled, families receive a comprehensive Parent Orientation Guide that includes detailed recommendations for seasonal gear, layering strategies, and clothing best suited for our active, all-weather learning environment. We also provide guidance on lunch and snack packing for physically engaged forest learners. Ensuring your child is properly equipped helps them fully immerse in the outdoor experience with comfort and confidence.
Our enrollment process involves three simple steps:
Submit a New Student Application via our Enrollment Page.
Attend a Parent Information Session to ensure a mutual fit.
If no immediate openings are available and you wish to proceed, you’ll be added to our waitlist.
Placement from the waitlist is determined by a combination of factors including:
Age and developmental fit
Gender balance in the class
Desired location and schedule
Length of time on the waitlist
We strive to create balanced groups that support healthy social and developmental dynamics.
